MD Anderson Cancer Center Vertical Expansion

McCarthy Building Group
Houston, TX
2012

The Alkek Tower Expansion project was a 14 level vertical expansion of the existing 14 level hospital and treatment building for the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center at the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas.  The challenges of this project were numerous.

The first new level was 30’ tall and was constructed while the existing building roof and all existing mechanical units and systems on the roof remained in place and operational.   The new structure was completed on schedule despite receiving a direct hit from Hurricane Ike while work was underway on level 19.
