Duke University-French Family Science Center

Skanska USA Building, Inc
Durham, NC
2005

At six stories tall and 280,000 sf, the French Science Center at Duke University features research and teaching laboratories for several disciplines. The project posed a logistical challenge as it was built in tight quarters between existing buildings and over a new utility duct bank.

Duke University’s characteristic architectural style is maintained by way of a full-height internal atrium that extends the length of the building and features impressive CIP architectural exposed beams, slab soffits, bridges, and columns.  The combination of beam and slab construction and pan slab construction includes 10,500 cyds of concrete and 1,300 tons of rebar placed in 42 weeks.
